Library Board of Trustees Meeting
June 16, 2021

The Knoxville Public Library Board of Trustees met at the library on Wednesday, June 16, 2021. Members present were Jean McKay, Bob Leonard, Harv Sprafka, Pat Wilson, and Mary Lane. Lindsey Carlson and Scott Ziller were absent. Staci Stanton, Holly Shelford, Heather Libby, and Connie Davids were also present, along with Dave Garcia.

The meeting was called to order by Pat Wilson. Mary Lane moved, seconded by Harv Sprafka to approve the minutes of the May 19, 2021 as mailed. Motion passed.
Roslin gave the librarian’s report for May 2021. Total circulation was 2,857 printed materials, 496 non-print items, 1,040 downloadables and 1,131 website visits. 322 uses of the computer were recorded as well as 581 wireless counts. There were 1,308 visits in the month. $3,022 was donated to the library mostly for the Summer Library Program and as reimbursement from the Rotary Club as partners for their grant. The library participated in Helmets and Hotdogs at the end of the school year (app. 200 attendees) as well as activity day at West Elementary for outreach (6 classes, 114 students and 10 adults).
Bob Leonard moved, seconded by Jean McKay to have a local artist, Brady Vander Hart, put up a display of his artwork at the library with a reception on July 22. He is attending the School of Art in Milwaukee, WI. Motion passed.
The library staff will have a booth set up at the Family Fun Fair on July 3 at Auld Park. 5 musical instruments are on loan at the Middle School this school year. The staff is working on a grant for a Book Bash for families with kids aged 0 – 5 years in July. Summer Library Program will continue until the end of July with many activities both virtual and in-person. The Rotary Club had funds from its grant to purchase STEM kits to circulate at the library. East Elementary has been purchased from the city and will be demolished in the near future for building lots.

Under Media Strategy Plan, Roslin reports that social media has been effective in reaching large audiences. She will boost some Facebook posts to reach more. The LEGO and “Bad Art” creations will be on display and advertised.

Harv Sprafka moved, Mary Lane seconded that the financial report for May be approved. Motion was unanimous. Jean McKay moved, Bob Leonard seconded the city trust report for May be accepted. Motion was unanimous. Mary Lane moved, Harv Sprafka seconded the approval for payment of bills for June. Motion passed unanimously, and a copy is attached to the minutes.

Under New Business, the Action Plan was tabled. The board agreed to get a quote from Iowa Environmental Services for asbestos abatement at the Gebhardt basement. Roslin will get quotes on items and services that the staff will put in for an application for the ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) grant.
Mary Lane moved, seconded by Jean McKay to accept Roslin’s recommendation for staff wages for FY2021/22. Motion passed. Adjustments have been made based on the Austin Peters Group survey of 23 Iowa cities and approved by city council June 4. Bob Leonard moved, Mary Lane seconded to purchase a Play table for the library.
Under Miscellaneous Business, Mary Lane and Pat Wilson tendered their retirement from the Board. A celebration of their years of service was held.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. The next regular meeting will be held Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at 8:00 A.M. at the library.
