Library Board of Trustees Meeting
January 20, 2021

The Knoxville Public Library Board of Trustees met at the library on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 8:00 a.m. Members present were Jean McKay, Bob Leonard, Harv Sprafka, Pat Wilson, Lindsey Carlson, and Scott Ziller. Mary Lane was absent. Director Thompson was present via Zoom.

The meeting was called to order by Pat Wilson. Jean McKay moved, Scott Ziller seconded to approve the minutes of the December 16, 2020 meeting as mailed. Motion passed unanimously.

There was no correspondence.

Roslin gave the librarian’s report for December 2020. Total circulation was 2,895 printed materials, 925 other items, and 1,043 downloadable items. Computer usage was 343 with 1,037 usage of the wifi. The meeting rooms/study rooms usage was 41 by outside groups. Total number of visits for December was 1,384.
Programming will continue to be on-line (book club, DIY, trivia) and grab-and-go kits or book bundles are available for patrons. The library has a winter reading challenge which will run until Feb. 12.
The library collected 53 hats, 122 pairs of gloves, and 40 pairs of mittens that were donated to Helping Hands and the schools. The Innovative Libraries Online Conference (ILOC) is on Jan. 21. The staff had a training session as we prepare for the server migration to version 5.x. scheduled for Jan. 30 during which time the library will be closed.
Roslin reported that the library was a recipient of the ALA grant “Libraries Transforming Communities” for $3,000. Funds will be used for a county-wide community read and series of programs in the Lifelong Learning series this year called Celebrate Diversity. All 5 libraries in Marion County will participate.

Under Media Strategy Plan, Roslin will write press releases about the grant award and the new traveling exhibit at the library called “Amazing Iowa Women.” There are 28 banners depicting women who have contributed or continue to contribute to the rich history of Iowa.

Sprafka moved, Carlson seconded that the financial report for December be approved. Motion was unanimous. Ziller moved, Leonard seconded the city trust report for December be accepted. Motion was unanimous. Sprafka moved, Ziller seconded the approval for payment of bills for January. Motion passed unanimously, and a copy is attached to the minutes.

Under Unfinished Business, Scott Ziller reported that he had talked to the city attorney and interim city manager regarding the excess capital campaign funds now that the campaign was completed. He has several recommendations: scholarships, setting up an endowment, or expenditures not covered by the general fund. Roslin will also make inquiries from the State Library.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned. The next regular meeting will be held on February 17, 2021 at 8:00 A.M. at the meeting room.
